Does Coffee Inhibit Iron Absorption?
For many of us, coffee is an essential part of the morning routine. But does drinking it with breakfast make it harder for your body to absorb iron?
The short answer is yes—at least to some extent. However, this does not mean you need to give up coffee. The timing may simply matter more for people who already have low iron levels or are at increased risk of iron deficiency.
How Coffee Affects Iron Absorption
Coffee primarily affects the absorption of nonheme iron, the type of iron found in plant foods and iron-fortified products. Common sources include beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, whole grains, leafy greens, oatmeal, and fortified breakfast cereals.
Coffee contains naturally occurring plant compounds called polyphenols, particularly chlorogenic acids. These compounds can bind to iron in the digestive tract, making some of it less available for the body to absorb. The most abundant chlorogenic acid in coffee is known as 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid.
This means that even when a meal contains iron, drinking coffee with that meal may reduce the amount your body actually absorbs.
For example, imagine eating a bowl of cereal or oatmeal topped with nuts and seeds while drinking a cup of coffee. The breakfast may provide a meaningful amount of iron, but the polyphenols in the coffee could decrease how much of that iron becomes available to your body.
Does Coffee Lower the Body’s Iron Stores?
Frequent coffee consumption may be associated with lower iron stores in some people. One study found that premenopausalwomen who drank more than two cups of coffee per day had lower ferritin levels (Lee et al., 2023). Ferritin reflects the amount of iron stored in the body, and low levels may appear before iron-deficiency anemia develops.
However, because the study was observational, it cannot show that coffee directly caused the lower ferritin levels. Iron status is also influenced by factors such as overall diet, menstrual blood loss, digestive health, iron intake, and supplement use.
For people with adequate iron stores and a varied diet, occasionally drinking coffee with a meal is unlikely to be a major concern. Timing may be more important for those who already have low ferritin, iron-deficiency anemia, heavy menstrual periods, limited iron intake, or conditions that interfere with iron absorption.
How Long Should You Wait After Eating?
There is no firmly established coffee-specific waiting period based on recent research. However, an earlier controlled study found that drinking coffee one hour after a meal still reduced iron absorption (Morck et al., 1983).
Waiting approximately two hours after an iron-rich meal or iron supplement before drinking coffee may be a cautious and practical approach.
You can also enjoy your coffee between meals rather than alongside breakfast, lunch, or dinner. This allows you to keep your coffee ritual without unnecessarily interfering with the iron in your food.
Possible Signs and Effects of Iron Deficiency
Iron deficiency can develop gradually, so it may not be obvious at first. Some people have depleted iron stores before they develop iron-deficiency anemia or experience noticeable symptoms.
As iron deficiency progresses, possible signs and effects may include weakness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, reduced exercise or work performance, difficulty regulating body temperature, and impaired cognitive or immune function (National Institutes of Health, Office of Dietary Supplements, 2025).
Because these concerns can have many different causes, symptoms alone cannot confirm iron deficiency. Blood testing may include hemoglobin, serum ferritin, transferrin saturation, and other markers selected by a healthcare professional.
What About Iron Supplements?
Coffee should generally not be taken at the same time as an iron supplement. It is better to take the supplement with water and follow the instructions provided by your healthcare practitioner.
Pairing iron with a source of vitamin C may also help improve nonheme iron absorption. For example, an iron-rich meal could include berries, citrus fruit, bell peppers, tomatoes, kiwi, or another vitamin C–rich food.
However, more is not always better when it comes to iron. Iron supplements should be used thoughtfully because excessive iron intake can also be harmful. If you suspect that your iron levels are low, testing ferritin and other relevant blood markers can provide a clearer picture than symptoms alone.
The Bottom Line
Coffee can reduce the absorption of nonheme iron when it is consumed with or shortly after an iron-rich meal. Still, there is no need to fear your morning cup.
For most people, the goal is not to eliminate coffee but to be more intentional about timing. If you have low iron stores or iron-deficiency anemia, consider drinking coffee between meals and leaving approximately two hours between coffee and your iron-rich meal or supplement.
Sometimes, a small change in timing can help you enjoy the foods and drinks you love while still supporting your nutritional needs.
